More than a billion Australians are now online, with the vast majority of them playing games on consoles, PCs and mobile devices.
But according to research from research firm eMarketer, there are plenty of games that are not on the latest platforms and not on Steam, the Steam app for mobile devices that has been used by millions of people in recent months.
In a research note to clients today, the firm revealed that of the 534 games that were on its “most played” list, almost half of them were mobile-only games.
It found that only one of those games was released on mobile platforms in 2016.
The report also revealed that almost 50 per cent of the games on the “most popular” list were either PC games or mobile games.
There were a number of games on that list, including titles like Angry Birds Star Wars and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
“Mobile games are a hotbed of interest to the eMarketers team, and as we know, the market for mobile games has exploded over the past few years,” eMarketing director Paul Sousa said.
“There are currently over 1 billion mobile users in Australia, and the majority of those are on devices like tablets and smartphones.”
They’re playing games with great frequency and we’re seeing the number of people playing them explode, so it’s exciting to see that a game like Grand Theft Air Force One is also a mobile game.
“The number of mobile-enabled games on Steam is on the rise, with over 10 million registered users.”
However, there were a few games that made the cut for the most popular list.
“There’s a number on our list that were released in 2016,” Mr Sousas said.
“These are the games we think are the most interesting to the digital natives, and we’ve been playing them with our clients for the past three months.”
We found that a lot of those titles are really well-crafted, they’re fun, they have an engaging story and the gameplay is really fast paced.
And they’re being played by people who are playing games that they know are available on mobile devices, so that’s a good sign.
“The report found that the biggest growth for the industry has been for mobile-focused games.”
Most mobile games that have been released since 2016 have been mobile-first, with a focus on making games accessible and engaging for players of all ages and skill levels,” Mr Bowers said.
The most recent release on Steam was Grand Theft Aircraft, a free-to-play game that lets players control a plane and fly it across the country.
The next most popular mobile game, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, was released last month and is being re-released on March 25.
The eMarkets study also found that of games released between March 25 and April 1, a further 14 per cent had no online component.
It’s a trend that eMarket says will continue to grow.”
Our study indicates that more than 1 billion people are now playing mobile games on Android, iOS and Windows phones, and over the last three months the market has seen a huge growth in the number and variety of mobile games,” Mr Ahern said.
